What is a WAQF

What is Waqf?

Waqf (وقف) is an Islamic legacy, a form of Sadaqah Jariyah (ongoing charity) that continues to benefit people for generations. It is an asset, property, or funds dedicated for the sake of Allah(swt),  the donated wealth is preserved, while its profits or benefits are used for charitable purposes. In the case of Wythenshawe Masjid the property that is purchased, it’s rental income will continue for many years to come insha’Allah in maintaining the Masjid, bring people closer to Allah (swt), educate our younger generation on their Deen and support the community

Islamic Precedence of Waqf

The concept of waqf has deep roots in Islamic tradition and has been practiced since the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).

  • Umar ibn Al-Khattab (RA) once acquired a valuable piece of land and sought advice from the Prophet (PBUH) on what to do with it. The Prophet advised him: “If you like, you may make the property itself inalienable and give its profit as charity.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, 2737; Sahih Muslim, 1632).
  • Uthman ibn Affan (RA) purchased the famous well of Rumah and dedicated it as a waqf for public use.
  • The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself established waqf by dedicating palm orchards in Medina for the benefit of the Muslim community.

For centuries, waqf has played a key role in developing communities by funding schools, hospitals, mosques, and social services. We have seen this even in Manchester and respect our elders and older generations who invested in Waqf which has allowed the Masajid to flourish.

The Importance of Waqf in Islam

  • Everlasting Reward – Waqf is a form of Sadaqah Jariyah, which means that as long as people continue to benefit from it, the donor earns continuous rewards, even after death. The best ever Investment….

When a person dies, all their deeds end except three: a continuing charity, beneficial knowledge and a child who prays for them.” Muslim

  • Sustaining the House of Allah & The community – Waqf will help in the long-term maintenance and financial sustainability of Wythenshawe Masjid, ensuring that it continues to serve the community without financial struggle.

“The Mosques of Allah shall be maintained only by  those who believe in Allah and the Last Day; perform As-Salaah (Iqaamat-as-Salah), and give Zakah and fear none but Allah. It is they who are on true guidance” (Tawbah 9:18)

  • Preserving and Growing Assets – Unlike one-time charity, waqf is a self-sustaining model that generates ongoing benefits without depleting the original donation.
